Subtle Miracles

White bird flocks cut a swathe through the black mass of rain filled cloud
Coming from shores afar they move in unison with a grace that is endowed
Instant communication occurs between members of the group, unseen signal
They stop and wheel in stunning patterns, weaving tapestry delicately regal

When searching for Spirit's emblem in daily life, my sight was set lofty
I looked for miracles disturbing cause and effect, with changes mighty
Blind would see, diseased would be at peace, and sickness finally heal
Only that can prove a God is worthy of praise, before whom I can kneel

But God's hand is seen only in ways subtle, not for her the grand gesture
Our being has to be finely tuned to receive evidence of her divine treasure
Like a lightning streak in the sky, swift to blaze and then subside quiet
Her work gleams with deep color, amidst ordinary moments that beset life

When a migrating flock flies overhead, or a butterfly forms from chrysalis
Or a single cell divides into higher form, with awareness of inner bliss
When death arrives as her messenger to cloak us with a final tender light
I see miracles of greater order than leper's cure or blind receiving sight
